Double-weighted statement

Based on a very substantial amount of new research in national, county and local, and private archives across Scotland, this work interweaves arguments about the nature of political culture in eighteenth century Scotland, the character and social and geographic scope of different currents of opinion in the 1790s, with an examination of the growing convergence and integration of Scottish political culture with a wider British politics. It offers the first systematic examination of responses at the national and local levels, including by burgh elites, to sharp rises in food prices in 1795-6 and 1799-1801.
