English abstract
Analysis of the development of doctrine among the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists between 1811 and 1914. Beginning with an assessment of the biblical theology of Thomas Charles of Bala and the doctrinal scheme of Thomas Jones of Denbigh, the chapter describes the way in which ‘consistent Calvinism’ became the doctrinal norm in the face of challenges from hyper-Calvinism and Wesleyanism. The 1823 Confession of Faith is expounded, the contribution of Lewis Edwards is noted as is the philosophical idealism of Thomas Charles Edwards. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the doctrinal influence of J. Cynddylan Jones and J. Puleston Jones.
