Additional information

Detailed knowledge of the dramatic strength increase of sub-micron metal samples will be critical for design of miniaturised technologies (e.g. MEMS). Here, an alternative interpretation to previous theories was provided. A size effect was clearly demonstrated, for the first time, which influences macroscopic behaviour and provides a new argument linking the size effect to image forces at free surfaces.
