Additional information

This paper is one of the first studies to take electrospun biodegradable scaffolds into animal experiments to assess the biocompatibility and immune response to the scaffolds. It shows how these scaffolds can be made to breakdown predictably and gives a solid foundation for how to use these for tissue engineering. The specific application in this paper was for the development of a biodegradable synthetic scaffold to replace the use of human donor dermis in tissue engineering. This has now attracted NHS Burns Service Development funding (£58k in 2014) to develop this for skin reconstruction for clinical use.
