This contribution reports the discovery of a fundamentally new type of ion-exchange behaviour in microporous materials, effected by the application of high pressure. This discovery was independently verified (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201201045) and offers a novel and transformative approach to the synthesis of metastable materials and irreversible sequestration of chemotoxic and radioactive cations from aqueous solution. Consequently, this research elicited collaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory. The research was funded in part by EPSRC (EP/F055412/1).
