Additional information

Titanium dioxide coatings have great potential for photo-induced hydrophobic self-cleaning surfaces. This research achieved a breakthrough by demonstrating controlled growth of anatase or rutile titanium dioxide films using the arc ion plating technique. The results are of significant practical importance, firstly by offering a lower cost alternative process route. Secondly the ability to control the phase structure has particular significance for a wide range of leading-edge applications, including photocatalytic, antibacterial, bio-medical and photo-sensitive. This is the only arc deposition paper mentioned in a recent review paper from BMW Group and Leipzig University (DOI: 10.1039/c2ee03390a).
