Additional information

This output resulted in the RNLI’s decision to adopt water-based lubrication as their preferred slipway lubrication system with significant savings in costs, safety and environmental impact (see REF3). Cost savings due to the removal of grease from the slipway are estimated to be up to £200k per annum when the system is adopted across the entire RNLI slipway network. This research was subsequently selected for an invited talk by Professor Mark Hadfield at the Royal Society of Arts, London, to a high profile visiting Chinese delegation of key academics and industrialists hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (http://tv.theiet.org/technology/power/1225.cfm).
