Additional information
The paper presents an experimental study of the loading of a vertical circular cylinder forced to prescribe an orbital trajectory of increasing and decreasing amplitude. The loading is representative of that experienced by a horizontal element of an offshore structure during an extremely severe wave group. Coefficients are presented for an empirical equation that is widely used by the offshore industry for offshore structure design and insight into vortex-induced loads is obtained. The paper has contributed to award of an EPSRC project on extreme loading on marine energy devices.
