The combination of computational fluid dynamics and sediment transport for non-steady (in this case, tidal) flows is largely uninvestigated, but is of prime importance because of its impact on coastal erosion and defences.

Building on this, subsequent applications of the computer code (STREAM) include scour around structures (e.g. hydraulic structures, monopiles for offshore wind turbines, bridge piers). This is timely, given the recent devastation wrought by flash flooding in various parts of Britain.
