Additional information

This research was conducted during preparation for the 2008 ‘Hidden Valley’ expedition in association with Medex (http://www.medex.org.uk/; Dr S Curran; simon@medex.org.uk). The paper reports the diversity in how individuals maintain oxygen delivery to tissues in a low oxygen environment. Recognition of this hitherto described phenomenon has potential implications for optimising management of hypoxia in clinical situations on a personal basis. This research evolved from previous collaborative work investigating circulatory and respiratory responses to breathing reduced oxygen in healthy humans as an analogue for developing our understanding of clinical diseases where oxygen delivery is compromised at sea level (Dr Wolff; chriswolff@doctors.org.uk).
