Additional information

This is an important collaboration with a ventricular assist device (VAD) manufacturer, Berlin Heart, and uses numerical simulation to address a clinically important challenge. A simulation of the cardiovascular response in heart failure was developed under the support of an INCOR impeller-type VAD. A series of VAD-assisted cardiovascular cases are studied. Key parameters of the VAD motion profile are systematically changed to investigate the potential of using the INCOR to produce a physiologically meaningful arterial pulse pressure within various physiological constraints. An optimization process, including the introduction of a cost function, balances the importance of characteristic cardiovascular variables.
