Design and evaluation: End users, user datasets and personas
The paper details research into the use of personas by the design community through two different approaches. The first approach uses data driven personas created in research funded by Nissan Technology Centre, Japan to aid their future design of cars for a particular market. The second approach uses the empathic data on people collected to support an inclusive design software package (HADRIAN). Funded by EPSRC through the ‘EQUAL’ (1999-2002, £260K) and ‘Sustainable Urban Environment’ (2003-2007, £297K) programmes, the HADRIAN research builds upon our 40+ years of experience in developing and applying the SAMMIE human modelling tool, (see www.SammieCad.com). This latter approach details one aspect of a large multidisciplinary and on-going body of work and is No. 13 of 14 journal papers that have resulted from this research. The research has also produced 2 PhDs, 2 book chapters, and over 30 conference papers and invited presentations at workshops and other events. This paper (double-blind peer reviewed) was invited for a special edition of this international journal.
