<22> Originality: While a survey paper, it is original in its analysis of research involving discourse structure, its presentation of current language technology applications that exploit discourse structure, and its discussion of future applications -- in particular, in statistical machine translation.

Significance: Has been adopted for graduate courses in Natural Language Processing at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Heidelberg, as well as the University of Edinburgh. It is becoming one of two standard references on discourse processing (along with Manfred Stede's recent monograph on the topic).
