Significance of output:

This paper details the first application of the component method to design of structures subjected to blast. The approach overcomes the problem that existing modelling techniques used by industry require the joints to be simplified and have been shown by this paper to produce unsafe solutions. The approach developed overcomes this problem without creating computational overload, providing a practical solution to a critical problem facing blast engineering. The impact is through improving the design of blast resistant structures for applications such as the for the nuclear power and petrochemical industries.
