Additional information

A common device for energy harvesting is a resonant cantilever beam with a piezoelectric patch to generate power. Usually this patch is rectangular and covers the whole beam; this paper showed that shaping the piezoelectric material can significant increase the power generated. This was an early paper on piezoelectric energy harvesting that lead to collaborations with Virginia Tech (USA) and the Lublin University of Technology (Poland), and a Royal Society International Joint Project with IIT Madras (India). Recent work has concentrated on the analysis and optimisation of nonlinear harvesters with piezoelectric sensors for random excitation.
