Additional information

Complex net-shaped preforms offer the opportunity to streamline production of advanced composite structures. Weaving techniques to place fibres in multiple directions is not new, however the application of mathematical techniques to model such manufacture is novel. The paper presents the initial stages of the process of modelling 5-axis structures – developing work previously completed and offers a new set of tools for the design of textiles for aerospace structures. The paper has direct industrial impact on the use of multi-axis composites for manufacture because of reduced processing times £97k-INI-PoC-11A. The technology is currently being developed by Bombardier Aerospace at NIACE.
