Additional information

This article reflects the international collaborative nature of research with groups at the SuperSTEM Facility at Daresbury, MAX-Laboratory in Sweden, University of Birmingham and Tamkang University in Taiwan. Papakonstantinou led the project and obtained research facility time at Max Laboratory. This paper was the first demonstration of ultrathin diamond nanorods (DNRs), with a diameter smaller than the theoretical value for energetically stable DNRs due to their encapsulation with a graphene layer. The paper has been used in the EPSRC public engagement grant EP/I01764X/1 to attract students to Science and Engineering.
