Double-weighted statement

The research for this article involved not only the comparison and analysis of a body of material in order to propose a new theory about the nature of Buddhist funerals, but also the generation of the primary data by the author. This data was collected in the course of eight separate field trips (made possible with funding from three major and three smaller grants) to four countries (Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar) undertaken over a period of 12 years (1998–2010). These field trips involved the observation, recording, and sometimes also filming, of some 30 separate Buddhist ceremonies.
