Grab the Uranium
Atkinson was invited to take the post of artist in residence at Knust in Nijmegen in order to produce a book; Grab the Uranium.
Published in 2011 this publication documents the breadth and qualities of Risograph printing, for which Knust are internationally renowned. Risograph duplication printing uses a scanner and a heat press to burn voids in a plastic ‘master’. The master is then applied to a drum and spun, forcing ink from the drum through the voids onto the paper. The technique provides a print that has the qualities of a screen print but can be reproduced in the thousands. The colour and ink quality cannot be matched by other digital presses, nor can the speed be matched using manual techniques. Grab the Uranium was cited as an example of what is possible uniquely with Risograph printing in the international Printmaking Today Journal (July, 2012), and has being acquired by the collection at the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
Atkinson’s collaborations are discussed by Finlay Taylor, Katarzyna Bazarnik, Zenon Fajfer and Tim Mosely's CODEX events, and explored in relation to the transformation of existing materials, collections, finds and souvenirs. Conversations about Atkinson’s work were developed in lectures at the University of Minnesota and in Sense of Place in Artists’ Books - Sarah Bodman, Dr Betty Bright, Marianne Coombs and Jeff Rathermel (2012). His projects were examined as part of the At the Nolte Center conference From Physical to Digital - What Do Artists Do with Books?
