Additional information

Performance and geometry of mammalian hearts are complex and affected by multiple factors and compensatory-feedback mechanisms which act over short and long time-scales. Following discussion of these with cardiologists in classic engineering terms such as pressure, flow rate, muscle-fibre stress and strain rates, and limits, paper proposes that stroke volume of left ventricle is a key simplifying criterion through which heart performance and failure can be better understood.
