Calcium Dynamics in the Ventricular Myocytes of SERCA2 Knockout Mice: A Modeling Study
An exciting and controversial recent result in cardiac excitation-contraction coupling was the finding that inducible knockdown of SERCA did not immediately lead to profound cardiac dysfunction. In this paper we provide a rigorous approach that, for the first time, provides a mechanistic explanation for this result, showing physiological compensation is key mechanism that can allow function to be maintained. In addition to this specific scientific insight the resulting cellular model has already provided a foundation for multi-scale work investigating whole organ cardiac response. It is published in the leading Biophysics Journal in the field.
