Additional information

This paper explained for the first time, how sipes (thin slits in snow tyres) grip effectively, through a combination of ploughing and rubber-snow interaction. This study established a method to link vehicle testing on Michelin test tracks in Finland with controlled lab testing in Edinburgh. This work improved the design of winter tyres with Michelin France (Jean-Baptiste Fourrel-de-Frettes).The study led to invited conference talks at “Ice deformation: from the model material to ice in natural environments” (http://www.igsoc.org/symposia/2011/grenoble/); and “Materials in Ski Technology”, Birmingham, 2013 (m.j.jenkins@bham.ac.uk).
