Additional information

This paper demonstrates the first use of direct cortical recordings to control simulated arm dynamics, representing a step-change in complexity from the kinematic task of computer-cursor control shown previously. Following ten years of arm non-use in a patient with brain-stem stroke, this demonstrates the feasibility of restoring arm movement with a neuroprosthesis controlled by brain signals. Cited by Nature and Nature Reviews Neurology, this formed part of the Braingate project that has received international publicity. This output was a key deliverable from NIH funding (NICHD N01-HD-5-3403) on which Chadwick was a Co-Investigator. Chadwick is the lead author on this paper.
