Additional information

A very affordable and versatile substrate, paper has great potential for a wide range of biological and biomedical applications. Modification with a range of amino acids allowed control of cell response and enhanced properties for preferred cell attachment and spreading. This ability to control the shape of fibroblasts and oestoblasts has the potential to be developed into a simple method to prepare cell adhesive polysaccharide-based substrates with applications in wound care or tissue-engineering. This work was further developed with support from EPSRC (EP/F0033125/1).
