This work was cited in the J. Applied Crystallography and Acta Cryst. D, with the protocols established being used to develop data collection strategies now heavily used at synchrotron facilities. The article reports on a study carried out as part of a PhD research project of the first author, R. Leal, a joint Keele University/Institut Laue Langevin/European Synchrotron Radiation Facilities student. Further collaborations with the ESRF staff ensued and funding for a joint PhD studentship with the ILL was secured for a London School of Pharmacy student (ILL contact M.C. Muller, mcmuller@ill.fr).
