From Old Times to New Europe: The Polish Struggle for Democracy and Constitutionalism is an ambitious contribution to research devoted to the establishment of the rule of law in post-Communist states. The approach is original and interdisciplinary, drawing on law, history and politics, to argue that developments in the Polish pre-war period (1918-1939) are critical to understanding responses to important legal questions after Communism’s fall in 1989. Relying on key Polish, Russian, and British archival documents, the study identifies relevant legal, political and conceptual connections and discontinuities that continue to exert influence on the law and administration of justice.
