Double-weighted statement

Because this synthesised work from both mid-twentieth century and present-day linguistics, it involved working with a large and diverse body of primary sources. Extensive research was required into Scandinavian philosophy, British philosophy and recent linguistics. Continuities, similarities and divergences in this large body of data then had to be assessed, so that an overarching thesis about the role of empiricism in language study could be developed, explained and supported. The book required some four years of research and writing.
