Additional information

The paper describes research from a Dorothy Hodgkin PG Award (Grant Number EP/P503094/1)/industry-funded project. It identifies the causes of variability in the foam index test (for evaluating fly ash/air entraining admixture behaviour) and, by standardising the procedure, improves its reliability. The paper demonstrates that the foam index can be used as a physical requirement test for fly ash (and is being considered for this by fly ash producers, rcarroll@ukqaa.org.uk) and as an element of concrete production control. The outcomes have potential to increase fly ash use by industry in air-entrained concrete.
