This is a very major study, representative of magisterial work developed over many years. It consists of 2 volumes, a total (including indexes) of over 1,600 pages, amounting to nearly 900,000 words. Each of the three longest chapters could have constituted a monograph in itself (chapter 9 = 88,000 words; 10 = 155,000 words; 11 = 133,000 words), and their cumulative weight is arguably greater than the sum of their parts. They of course also contribute to the larger picture offered by the study as a whole.
