An embodied approach to arthropod animation
<22>The paper describes a novel system for dynamically animating the locomotive behaviour of ground-based arthropods in real-time, facilitating realistic and autonomous traversal across a complex, arbitrary environment. The system combines a de-centralized reactive behavioural model with a hybrid approach to motion that utilizes the comparative advantages of physical simulation and kinematic control, and is capable of automatically generating complex organic motion and producing emergent behaviour over a wide range of surface features, independent of structural complexity. The paper is a result of preliminary work published at Theory and Practice of Computer Graphics (TPCG) 2007; it received the best paper prize.
