Research imperative and process: The Politics of the Provisional examines how ephemeral images and objects made in 1790s France mediated the memory of the French Revolution, with implications for how citizens became constructed as political subjects. Addressing this mass of images, which have conventionally been ignored in art history, The Politics of the Provisional contends that they were at the heart of debates on the nature of political authenticity and historical memory during the French Revolution. Taws’ book is based on extensive archival research in France and was selected for publication in both print and multiple-format fully illustrated digital editions as an inaugural volume supported by major grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Art History Publication Initiative and the College Art Association.
