Additional information

An invitation was issued by the Clay Studio in Philadelphia for Artist in Residence (2010). This created opportunity to develop research based on the shipyards and the use of dazzle camoflague by US and British Navies where the surfaces is marked not to hide the object but to alter the perception of its physical location/direction. The use of glaze and underglaze of close harmony and tone were applied to the surface to deconstruct the form.

‘Philadelphia Sentinel’ was exhibited in ‘Made at the Clay Studio: Work by Artists in Residence’, August 2010. In 2011 this investigation continued with Arts Council of Northern Ireland funding, at the Intonation Symposium, Germany where artists are invited to develop research in a 14-day studio event. 4 pieces were developed in Germany that explored surface deconstruction though the interplay of light and shade. This body of research continued throughout 2012 exhibiting as a 2-person show with Svein Narum at Galerie Marianne Heller, Heidelberg, titled ‘About Buildings and Vessels’.

As one of the selected artists representing Ireland in the International Ceramics Museums, Fuping, China, this research continued using Chinese engobes, now part of the collection of the Irish Pavilion, opening Oct. 1, 2011, curated by Dr. I Chi Hsu. This element of the research received a €14,000 grant from Culture Ireland and a €2000 grant from the Crafts Council of Ireland to fund the12 artists representing Ireland.

In 2012 a return exhibition and film was presented at Farmleigh Gallery, Dublin, curated by Hilary Morley. Over 4000 visitors attended. Here, ‘Double Walled Form’ was acquired by the collection of the Office of Public Works, Dublin. The exhibition continued to the Wandsford Gallery, Cork 2013. ‘Philadelphia Sentinel 2’ was exhibited at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe 2012 and the American Museum of Ceramic Art, CA, 2013.
