Effects of nonlinear sound propagation on the characteristic timbres of brass instruments
The paper defined the "brassiness potential" parameter (the ease with which nonlinear wave steepening occurs in a brass instrument), based on the bore profile of the instrument. It resulted from interdisciplinary research with the University’s Reid School of Music and Joel Gilbert of CNRS/Laboratoire d'Acoustique de l'Université du Maine (joel.gilbert@univ-lemans.fr). Brassiness potential is used as an objective tool for instrument classification by organologists. This paper contributed to the award of the £3.8M Marie Curie ITN BATWOMAN (Basic Acoustics Training and Workprogram on Methodologies for Acoustics Network) proposal.
