This is the first publication of an operating equation for hollow fibre membrane bioreactors for tissue engineering that incorporates the geometrical, fluid dynamics and mass transfer properties. This interdisciplinary collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics will support the design of more predictable and controllable bioreactors for tissue culture. The operating equation concept has led to three further PhD projects (two in Oxford, one in Bath) and Dr Shipley was awarded Young Researcher of the Year for the UK Tissue and Cell Engineering Society in 2011 for this work.
