As the first book on the subject, this research necessitated both extensive primary research and critical interpretation of a large number of texts. It involved the acquisition and study of a large corpus of films (50 key titles, plus over 100 produced in earlier decades as background research), of which about half were not commercially available and had to be sourced from archives, directors, producers and distributors in Italy. Extensive primary materials were also collected and analysed in the form of both statistical data on film production and exhibition and of interviews with a dozen filmmakers, producers and industry insiders.
