Writing Art: French Literary Responses to the Work of Alberto Giacometti. Cultural Interactions: Studies in the Relationship between the Arts
Preparation for this monograph required the analysis of a considerable range of material. Its corpus was established from the work of nine major twentieth-century French literary figures, requiring familiarity with Surrealism, Modernism and Existentialism. Primary research included locating articles in out-of-print journals in three different libraries in France. In addition to French literature and thought, the project spans the disciplines of art history and text-image relations, the latter taking two distinct forms in the French and Anglophone academies. It also required research into four separate theoretical areas: reception theory, performativity, ‘the haptic’ and ‘the figure’.
