Making Histories
As well as contributing to this 456-page book a 5200-word chapter, ‘Creating A View: Anglo-Saxon Sculpture in the Sixteenth Century’ (372-384), Hawkes organised the symposium on which the collection was based - the Sixth International Insular Art Conference - which the department hosted in York in 2011. Having brought together established academics and early career scholars, including three graduate students from the department, Hawkes solicited the 32 essays, conceptualised the volume, engaged in a rigorous revision and proofing process, collated the 40-page bibliography, and oversaw the prints and permissions for the volume’s 130 black-and-white illustrations and 48 colour plates.
