Additional information

This paper presents a methodological leap forward in assessment of energy losses in distribution networks. Through its robust incorporation of variable renewable sources and smart grid controls it demonstrates a fundamental tension between increased renewable penetrations and increased network losses. It proposes that a trade-off is necessary to avoid unduly penalising renewable generators to ensure carbon reductions. The work has been taken up by the University of Manchester and will be extended in the EPSRC PV WISE project (EP/K022229/1) and their collaboration with Electricity North West in the CLASS and LoVia projects (Luis Ochoa, Luis.Ochoa@manchester.ac.uk).
