In the context of handheld communication devices, this paper gives the first analysis of 3D antenna arrays combined with appropriate algorithms required to improve the scan angle without degrading the beam-width. This has contributed to the formation of a four-person spin-out company www.sofant.com (Sergio Tansini, email available) to develop electronically steerable array antennas for consumer applications.
