Additional information

This paper proved that the proposed algorithms outperform classical training-based methods for channel estimation. In current 4G cellular systems, pilot signals for channel estimation consume 5%-10% of the total transmitted power. The techniques reported reduce training or pilot power by over 50% and hence increases battery life, network capacity and operator revenue. Energy and spectral efficiency are major themes in FP-7 project CROWN-233843 (€2.3 M) with QinetiQ and Infineon (http://www.fp7-crown.eu/) and EPSRC-EP/I037156/1 grants. This work has been further extended by: Simon Fraser University, DoI:10.1016/j.patcog.2009.05.013; University Polytechnic of Valencia, DoI:10.1109/TAP.2011.2173441; and Southampton (DoI:10.1109/TWC.2009.090032).
