This EPSRC/BRE CASE project (Debbie Smith, BRE) defined a method for the rapid assessment of the failure potential of structural members in fires. Predicting when such failure occurs had been an open question for over fifteen years (Steel in Fire forum: http://tinyurl.com/n8w8eoj). This paper enabled probabilistic methods to be introduced into structural fire engineering by combining the assessment of numerous structural members, rather than relying on the previous single failure metric approach (Neil Butterworth, Arup, email available).
