Investigation of factors affecting loosening of ilizarov ring-wire external fixator systems at the bone-wire interface
This paper presented, for the first time, an investigation of non-linear mechanisms involved in the loosening and failure of implants that employ wires for bone fracture fixation. This study in conjunction with a subsequent paper (DoI:10.1016/j.injury.2012.07.001) contributed to an award ($50k) from the Geneva based Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation (richard.helmer@otcfoundation.org) and a PhD studentship from Orthopaedic Research UK (a.angadji@oruk.org). The study also led to an invited chapter to appear in “A Guidebook for Studies in Osteosynthesis” (ISBN:313-173111-1) published by Thieme (Editor: augat@bgu-murnau.de).
