Linear stability analysis and numerical simulation of miscible two-layer channel flow
The work established that the unstable nature of waves is a function of flow rate and the viscosity gradients. This has led to further work by other groups towards understanding the effects of length-scale on clean ability (DoI:10.1016/j.profoo.2011.09.259 and DoI:10.1016/j.fbp.2010.08.008). This is a key output from a collaboration between industry (Unilever, GSK, Alfa-Laval etc.) and academia (p.j.fryer@bham.ac.uk, e.b.martin@ncl.ac.uk) and co-funded by TSB (TP//ZEE/6/1/2119, £500k). The project contributed towards development of a benchmarking tool now used by partner companies to optimise their cleaning regimes and cut costs (http://www.foodmanufacture.co.uk/Manufacturing/Lead-by-the-hose).
