Additional information

This paper characterises the complex deformation structures in ice over a range of length scales using experimental techniques, and for the first time combines this experimental data with modelling. This led to an invitation to a Summer School on Microstructures of Ice and Snow (Prof. Loerting, thomas.loerting@uibk.ac.at), 2012, Austria. This study was highlighted in a review of multiscale modeling of ice deformation (DoI:10.1016/j.jsg.2013.05.002).The work helped establish a European Science Foundation network on Micro-Dynamics of Ice:€599k (www.microdice.eu), and has stimulated a new collaboration (thorsten.bartels-rausch@psi.ch Switzerland).
