Additional information

This paper which provides an experimental verification of the efficacy of three-phase circulating fluidised bed is developed further by the Part 2 theoretical analysis (DoI:10.1016/j.ces.2007.10.019). Two key findings are that the addition of particles enhances heat transfer and that particle-surface interaction facilitates continuous self-cleaning. This EPSRC funded (EP/J24210) programme was part-supported by Exxon Mobil and such self-cleaning technologies are deployed in industrial operations in USA and Japan (http://www.klarenbv.com/framespage.html).
