English abstract

Les fetes du Second Empire examines the civic festivals of the Second Empire (1852-1870) and discusses the extent to which they contributed to reviving the myth of the monarchy in 19th century France. It argues that napoleonic rituals were based on a political culture which was distinct both from republicanism and orthodox royalism, and that this distinctiveness explains both the success of the regimes civic festivals but also their limits.
