Additional information

This is an updated version of a chapter that appeared originally in 2001, requested by the editor in recognition of the fact that, as he notes, ‘the public perception of Pinter has shifted significantly in the last seven years’ (Raby, ‘Note on the second edition’, p. 4). Significant developments newly addressed include: softening attitudes to Pinter as his health deteriorated (he died in December 2008), the new national pride that was taken in the playwright following his award of the Nobel Prize in 2005, and Pinter’s high-profile opposition to US-led intervention in Iraq.
