Additional information

Funded by ESPRC IdMRC approx. £42k (GR/R67507/01), this project investigated an innovative approach of integrating and optimising multi-axis machining process planning and scheduling. This research used the first application of the Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithm to this integrated model to optimise production efficiency. A €3.5M EU FP7 collaborative project, CAPP-4-SMEs (NMP-ICT-FoF-2012-314024), was awarded subsequently to trial this research in precision machining industry in Sweden, UK, Germany and Spain. The algorithm has been deployed in large-scale machining shop floors, with up to 500 jobs and 20 machines, with a target to achieve 20% productivity improvement.
