Additional information

The paper presents a methodology for the prediction of instabilities using large eddy simulation (LES) results for the Sydney University swirl flames. This work results from close international collaboration between Loughborough University, Canfield University and Sydney University. In this work the large eddy simulation technique is applied for the modelling of non-premixed combustion and the transient data sets obtained from LES are used to predict instabilities in combustion. The combustion LES results were found to be leading in independent assessments made at the TNF8 workshop (Heidelberg) in comparison with other international groups' results http://public.ca.sandia.gov/TNF/8thWorkshop/TNF8.html.
