Effect of tribological factors on wet adhesion of a microstructured surface to peritoneal tissue
The first work describing adhesion properties of intra-abdominal tissue. Provides significant data for the design of a miniature mobile surgical device based on novel biomimetics approach. Supported by New and Emerging Applications of Technology (NEAT) grant (£363k, ref. FSD009). Interdisciplinary work achieved from collaboration between Mechanical and Electrical Departments at Leeds University and St. James’s University Hospital. Based on invited talk (Viennano International Conference on Nano Technology, Vienna, March 2009). Led to follow-on research and ongoing collaboration with St. James’s Hospital (validation contact, David Jayne, D.G.Jayne@leeds.ac.uk). Initiated new research direction on using magnetic fluids in surgery.
